Two weak tornadoes struck the Kansas City area as a line of strong thunderstorms rumbled through the metro on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. Survey crews spent Wednesday examining storm debris and determined that one tornado struck near the Truman Sports Complex and a second, stronger one near Missouri 291 and East Truman Road in Independence.

The $4 billion Panasonic battery factory in De Soto should have been a first-of-a-kind project for Kansas and the Midwest. In addition to the estimated 4,000 new jobs coming to town, Panasonic and the state expected another 4,000 jobs to come from suppliers they anticipated would move to Kansas to provide additional goods and materials the plant would need for its operations.

If you want to get someone to open their wallet, make them laugh. That may be a lesson to take away from the success of the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend in Kansas City. The troupe of Big Slick celebrities led by co-hosts Jason Sudeikis, Paul Rudd, Heidi Gardner, Eric Stonestreet, Rob Riggle and David Koechner kept people laughing during the Big Slick Party and Show Saturday night at T-Mobile Center.

It always ends in a fight. All be it a fake fight between entertainers who know how to make the brawling look real, like a bench-clearing fight in a baseball game. For years, that’s how the annual Big Slick Celebrity Softball game has ended and this year the teams carried on that tradition. And why not, it gets a laugh. That was what Friday’s game at Kauffman Stadium was mostly about, giving the fans who filled the lower sections of The K something to laugh about.

It no longer takes 80 days to circumvent the globe, but as of Tuesday, it’s 80 days until Chiefs football returns. The Chiefs released their preseason schedule, and the first game will be Aug. 9 against the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Chiefs will play another NFC West opponent on the road six days later when they travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks at Lumen Field. A week after that, the Chiefs will play their only home game on the preseason schedule.
