The Chief of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation northwest of Edmonton says his community is considering legal action to stop a massive project to build an AI centre on its territory. According to the website developed for the centre, the project, called Wonder Valley, will provide highly skilled jobs, bolster tax revenues and use natural gas and geothermal power to operate the 7.5 gigawatt facility. Businessman Kevin O’Leary is developing Wonder Valley.
Alberta Energy Regulator not inspecting spills says researcher

Alberta child advocate, Terri Pelton’s latest annual report on youth in the Alberta child welfare system shows the perennial continuation of too many Indigenous youth being severely injured or dying while in the system, or shortly after leaving. “What I think is particularly troubling is that 35 of the 48 young people [who were seriously injured or died] were Indigenous,” said Pelton.

An Elder in Samson Cree Nation in Alberta says he needs a warm place to stay until Samson Housing fixes his furnace. Elvis Wahkeenew says the furnace in his brand new modular home stopped working on Oct. 20 – and ever since then he’s been using his oven and a small heater to keep from freezing. “Sometimes I go sit in my vehicle and warm up,” he told APTN News, “especially in the night.”Wahkeenew, 65, is a widower and lives by himself. In 2022 he lost his son.
Indigenous groups buy $1B stake in pipeline

TC Energy Corp. is selling a minority stake in its Western Canadian natural gas transmission network to a consortium of Indigenous communities for $1 billion. The Calgary-based pipeline company said the deal, announced Tuesday, will enable 72 Indigenous communities to take a 5.34 per cent stake in its Nova Gas transmission system and Foothills pipeline assets, which together comprise a 25,000-kilometre network of natural gas infrastructure assets spanning Western Canada.

Members of Kehewin Cree Nation in Alberta are getting ready to vote on proposed changes to the community’s election laws. According to one community member, the main concern is an amendment that, if passed, will allow chief and councillors to run in as many consecutive terms as they want. “One of the reasons the new election law was created in 2017 was because we wanted to avoid career politicians,” said Tyler Youngchief, “that’s why we instituted a two term limit.
Anthony Bilodeau loses appeal of killing Métis hunters in Alberta

A panel of judges in Alberta has dismissed the appeal of the man who shot and killed two Métis hunters on a rural road in 2020. Anthony Bilodeau was convicted of second-degree murder for killing Maurice Cardinal, 57, and sentenced to life in prison. He was also handed an eight-year term for the manslaughter death of Jacob Sansom, 39. Both sentences were to be served concurrently.

On a three-lane test track along the Monongahela River, an 18-wheel tractor-trailer rounded a curve. No one was on board. A quarter-mile ahead, the truck's sensors spotted a trash can blocking one lane and a tire in another. In less than a second, it signaled, moved into the unobstructed lane and rumbled past the obstacles.
