The Chief of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation northwest of Edmonton says his community is considering legal action to stop a massive project to build an AI centre on its territory. According to the website developed for the centre, the project, called Wonder Valley, will provide highly skilled jobs, bolster tax revenues and use natural gas and geothermal power to operate the 7.5 gigawatt facility. Businessman Kevin O’Leary is developing Wonder Valley.

Questions are being raised about the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and how it’s inspecting reported leaks from tailings ponds in the province’s tar sands projectsAccording to research conducted by Kevin Timoney, the AER has only had its investigators inspect less than 4% of the 514 reported leaks. “They also made the statement that in all 514 of the spills that they divulged to the public,” he said. “That there were no environmental impacts. Alberta child advocate, Terri Pelton’s latest annual report on youth in the Alberta child welfare system shows the perennial continuation of too many Indigenous youth being severely injured or dying while in the system, or shortly after leaving. “What I think is particularly troubling is that 35 of the 48 young people [who were seriously injured or died] were Indigenous,” said Pelton.

An Elder in Samson Cree Nation in Alberta says he needs a warm place to stay until Samson Housing fixes his furnace. Elvis Wahkeenew says the furnace in his brand new modular home stopped working on Oct. 20 – and ever since then he’s been using his oven and a small heater to keep from freezing. “Sometimes I go sit in my vehicle and warm up,” he told APTN News, “especially in the night.”Wahkeenew, 65, is a widower and lives by himself. In 2022 he lost his son.
