In a stunning move, Rick McCabe — a onetime Republican City Council candidate — is now looking to buck the party establishment with an independent run for mayor.   McCabe, 52, was thought to be preparing for another council run on the Republican ticket, but instead is seeking the city’s top elected seat on his own, he told The Record this month before officially launching his campaign.  That decision, he said, was finalized in mid-February.

Republican City Councilman Bill Henderson has officially announced he is running for mayor — ending months of speculation. Henderson, 66, will top a GOP ticket that includes running mates James Fee, Robin Thrush Jovanovich, and Maria Tufvesson Shuck.   “I believe I am best positioned to lead the Rye City Council for the next four years,” said Henderson.

Councilman James Ward took his ceremonial oath of office on Wednesday night, in a brief ceremony preceding his first Rye City Council meeting. Ward, a Democrat, joins the council after being elected in an uncontested race in November. An environmental advocate who chaired the city Sustainability Committee, he sees developing a new master plan as his priority. But his term is only interim — he’ll serve this year, filling the seat previously held by Sara Goddard.

The New York state equal rights ballot proposition scored a big win on election night. The statewide ballot measure, known as Prop 1, won 56.5 percent to 34.9 percent. In Westchester, voters overwhelmingly backed the measure by a more than 2 to 1 margin — 68 percent to 32 percent.

Democrat James Ward was elected to an unexpired term on the Rye City Council in a surprisingly close contest —  against an opponent who dropped out of the race more than a month  ago.   Ward, 56, ran unopposed — in what was initially expected to be  a hotly contested race — when his Republican challenger, Rick McCabe, dropped out of the race in September, citing health issues.   McCabe, 52, had barely campaigned for the seat after announcing his candidacy in May.
