SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — NewsChannel 9 is putting you on the lookout for criminals that may be coming for your mail. Thieves have been stealing checks right from neighborhood collection boxes. According to a NewsChannel 9 viewer, he deposited envelopes with personal checks in them that were stolen from a collection box on West Seneca Turnpike in Syracuse. The viewer says the checks were stolen and washed, meaning they were chemically washed and made out to the thief. He’s not alone.

MANLIUS, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Police are putting the public on scam watch after they say someone stole $75,000 from a man in Manlius. This latest case of identity theft has been puzzling for the victim. Detectives say someone went to a bank in Maryland, pretending to be the man from Manlius. The scammer then took $75,000 from his bank account. They also bought a cell phone in the victim’s name.
