“I never thought of happiness as something reachable. Happiness is not something you can hold onto.” So says artist Hung Liu in the wall text of Hung Liu: Happy and Gay, an exhibit that examines the painter’s series based on Maoist propaganda books for children that were prevalent throughout her childhood in China. The slipperiness of joy and of memory is evident in the paint drips that stain what are usually otherwise placid scenes.

Thanks for being a member of City Paper! Rhythm, light, and shadow: These are the three main motifs featured in fine art photographer Anice Hoachlander’s work. Hoachlander centers a wide variety of natural life and human creation in her art—from the geometry of modern architecture to the way Spanish Moss dances in the warm breeze of the Carolinas. Hoachlander has an eye for the naturally occurring patterns in both organic life and inorganic matter.

Thanks for being a member of City Paper! “We’ve returned to the scene of the crime!” an impish Brian Ritchie, bassist of the Violent Femmes said when the band took the stage at HFStival at Nationals Park on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Violent Femmes played the second iteration of the festival in the summer of 1991 at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, Virginia. Same crime, different scene.
