Over 40 people attended Tuesday afternoon's emotional and high-energy book launch of Franklin writer Jared Sullivan's debut, "Valley So Low," at Landmark Booksellers. The book is out with Alfred A. Knopf and is nonfiction. It mostly follows a personal injury lawyer from Kingston, Tennessee, Jim Scott, who represents workers after they fall ill due to power plant-created coal sludge toxins. The sludge is contained behind an earthen embankment until it breaks in 2008, three days before Christmas.

The Arts Council of Williamson County will hold its third Art Crawl of the year on Franklin’s Main Street and beyond on Friday. Businesses will host artists of multiple mediums starting at 6 p.m. Many businesses also provide food and drinks during the event. This Art Crawl’s featured artists include Heather Bethurum, Pauline Rogers and Joan Wilkes at the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church. They are painters. Bethurum’s paintings often focus on the natural world. She has a passion for education.

An Independence High School senior made history this year as the school's first African American homecoming queen in its 20-year history. Jayla Miller won the title in October. Now, nearing graduation, she will leave a legacy of advocacy and leadership. "When I heard I was the first, it almost brought tears to my eyes because the school had been open for 20 years, and for not one person of color to have been crowned queen really made me feel like I did something for girls like me," Miller said.
