The towering full back from Milltown won All-Irelands in a row for Galway from 1964-66. He is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest full backs to ever play the game. Noel was named the Texaco/Caltex Footballer of the Year in 1964 at the young age of 22 which was the highest honour in the game in the pre All-Stars era. In a poignant moment, the 2024 Footballer of the Year Paul Conroy was in Noel’s hometown of Milltown at a packed event to mark the life and legendary career of Tierney.
