A man's body has been found in a field in north Roscommon. It was discovered in Ballyfarnon on Friday night at around 8.30. Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the case and a technical examination was carried out. His remains were taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will take place. The local coroner has been notified and sources say foul play is not suspected. The man has not been identified yet.

A new €1m training centre is set to be opened in Ballaghaderreen next Monday. The Mechanical and Electrical Training and Assessment Centre is in the Mill Business Park. It has state-of-the-art equipment, classrooms and workshop spaces for up to 10 learners.

A son of Robert Pether says he's confident his family's nightmare is coming to an end - and his dad will soon return to Roscommon. Robert was in jail in Iraq for four years before being released on bail last night. There was a contract row between his employer and the Central Bank of Iraq, leading to his imprisonment.

The co-ordinator of South Roscommon Family Resource Centre says funding announced yesterday 'is a drop in the ocean'. It comes following an allocation of €60,000 confirmed by the Minister for Community and Rural Development. Minister Dara Calleary announced €1 million for local projects during a visit to Roscommon yesterday. South Roscommon FRC was one of four groups in Roscommon to receive a combined total of €213,000.

Permanent maintenance boats are needed on major rivers like the Shannon, according to a Leitrim TD. Deputy Martin Kenny made the call to OPW Minister and Longford Westmeath TD Kevin 'Boxer' Moran during statements on flooding matters in the Dail recently. The Sinn Fein TD says that pinch points on the Shannon and other large rivers are causing major flooding and putting pressure on land owners.
