A Roscommon priest, based in the US for 66 years, is delighted with the appointment of the new Pope. The man now known as Pope Leo The 14th became the first ever US Pope last Thursday. Monsignor Kevin Flanagan is from Kilglass in Co Roscommon but has been based in the US since his ordination in 1959. He’s currently based in Paterson, New Jersey, and gave his reaction to the Pope’s appointment to Eoghan Murphy:

That's according to Ballintober's Gail Murray, who is bidding to replace deceased councillor Anthony Waldron. Ballintober's Michael Holland Senior is among the other candidates - and councillors will have the final say in two weeks' time.

Longford is worst in the country for power cuts

The Longford ESB area has been deemed to be the worst place for power cuts in the country. Data provided by the Irish Mail on Sunday revealed the area had the highest risk of power cuts last year. The ESB Longford region includes parts of Roscommon and Leitrim, where 995 outages were counted for the year of 2024. During these outages, 88,190 customers were affected, out of which just over 41,000 were provided by the ESB.
Garda killed after being hit by motorbike at checkpoint

A garda has been killed after being stuck by a motorcycle at a speed checkpoint in Co Dublin this afternoon. The officer has been named as 49-year-old Kevin Flatley, a father-of-two, who was based in the roads policing unit in Dublin Castle. Garda Kevin Flatley was conducting a speed checkpoint just before 1pm this afternoon on the R132 north of Ballbriggan in Dublin when the collision occurred. He was critically injured at the scene and was pronounced dead a short time later.
'Serious failings' in initial garda probe into Hawe family murder in Cavan

There were serious failings in the original investigation into the murder of Clodagh Hawe and her three sons in Co Cavan nine years ago. There were mistakes collecting vital CCTV, which led to two gardaí facing disciplinary action. Crucial digital evidence, including a secret phone used by murderer Alan Hawe to access depraved and illegal pornography, was also missed. The damning findings on the first investigation are included in a serious garda case review.

Defence of Longford arson accused criticised by judge

The legal defence of a man accused of arson in Longford Town has been criticised by a presiding judge for their failure to meet a court appointed deadline. Guo Zhong Chen, of 9 Belvedere Terrace, Mullingar, was arrested and charged with arson over the July 28th fire that caused €3 million worth of damage to Grafton Court in the town centre.

A new Pope's been chosen. Cardinal Robert Prevost is the first ever US pontiff. He's 69 and has taken the papal name Leo the 14th. The secretive conclave only started meeting just over 24 hours ago. It ended when white smoke was seen pouring out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at about 5 pm Irish time.
