The North Metro Fire Rescue District has selected a candidate to succeed current Fire Chief David Ramos when he retires in July. Fire Deputy Chief of Operations Mark Daugherty has been selected by North Metro’s board following a nationwide search. “(Daugherty) has really risen to all the challenges that the senior leadership has placed upon him over the last several years,” Board President Richard Miller said.

Broomfield could increase its high-density zoning near Arista and Flatirons Marketplace that would allow for 11,500 new housing units to be built in the future, according to Anna Bertanzetti, Broomfield’s deputy city and county manager. The plans come following state legislators passing House Bill 24-1313 last year, which calls for municipalities to allow higher density residential zoning near transit centers.

In its Tuesday night meeting, Broomfield City Council directed city staff to pursue regulations about so-called “natural medicine” that has been decriminalized in the state. In 2022, Colorado voters approved Proposition 122, and it, along with subsequent legislation, decriminalizes regulated distribution and therapy programs for certain hallucinogenic plants and fungi, including the substance psilocybin, according to a City Council document.

Residents looking to collect firewood in either the Roosevelt or Arapaho national forests can now purchase a permit online. A large chunk of Roosevelt National Forest is in Boulder County. The online permits are available now through a new system and can be purchased by computer or mobile device at epermits.fs2c.usda.gov. A printed physical permit must still be carried and kept readily available while harvesting and transporting firewood, the website says.

Young people ages 3 to 12 may see their bookmark designs chosen for all library patrons to use – a contest for the best one opens this week at the Broomfield Library. The annual Broomfield Library Friends Foundation contest this year has a theme of “Color my world.” It gives kids the opportunity to design their own official library bookmarks. The contest features three age categories, kids ages 3 to 5; 6 to 8; and 9 to 12.
