Abbott told the Harris County Lincoln-Reagan dinner last weekend that he was disappointed some key items did not pass this session, adding, "All I can say is we may not be done yet."In particular, Abbott cited the failure of a bill to ban taxpayer-funded lobbying by local governments.

Texas is allocating big money to bolster the state's energy production. This year's Legislature passed House Bill 14, which creates a new $350 million fund for nuclear energy projects, along with a new state nuclear energy office. The nuclear industry initially sought $2 billion for the fund, but after much debate lawmakers settled on the $350 million amount as a more reasonable starting point. The 2025 Texas Legislature was a mixed bag when it comes to immigration and border bills. Lawmakers passed some items on the GOP's priority list, like Senate Bill 8, which requires Texas sheriffs to sign cooperation agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The legislature also passed Senate Bill 36, which creates a Homeland Security Division within the Texas Department of Public Safety. But plenty was left on the cutting room floor.

Democrats are historically unpopular, even among Democrats. A new Quinnipiac University survey finds 53% of Democrat voters disapprove of their leaders in Congress, with only 41% approving. Conversely, 79% of Republicans approve of their Congressional leaders. The findings mirror a dismal overall picture for Dems, with only 21% of voters approving of Democrats in Congress, matching the record low set earlier this year.
