WATERTOWN — City council members hope to hear soon more about the results of a state inspection at the city hydroelectric plant two weeks ago to determine whether the facility is in federal compliance. The state Department of Environmental Conservation completed an on-site inspection of the Marble Street hydro plant on May 15 after a group of river activists alleged that the facility on the Black River was not in compliance with its Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license.

WATERTOWN — The City Council will vote Monday night on a 2025-26 fiscal plan after talking about it during five meetings, two budget hearings and spending many hours to get the tax rate increase down to single digits. As a result of a final meeting on May 22, city property owners can now expect a 9.21% tax rate increase. Councilman Robert O. Kimball expects his colleagues to pass the budget on Monday night, saying that the council changed what they could. “We went through it,” Kimball said.

WATERTOWN — Ballots have been printed for the June 24 City Council primary and Councilman Cliff G. Olney’s name is not on them. The Jefferson County Board of Elections went ahead printing the ballots while Olney is continuing his efforts in court to secure a spot on the ballot as he runs for reelection. Olney, a first-term councilman, has a court hearing next Friday after refiling a motion seeking to have a state Supreme Court judge reverse a decision that his name is not on the ballot.
