The Helena Senators Hall of Fame is being reinstituted after a 6-year hiatus. Seven former players - three from the 2019 class and four with the new 2025 class - will be enshrined into the S.H.O.F. on Aug. 4 during a ceremony at Kindrick Legion Field. Those seven guys include (2019) Paul Hopkins 1967-70, Chris Keim 1985-87 and Tanner Swanby 2000-03; as well as (2025) Vic Kelley 1971-73, Jeff Tuss 1984-87, Quinn LeSage 2001-03 and Colter Sternhagen 2009-11.

When Tom McMahon was a young boy growing up in Helena, Montana, he witnessed a hometown hero’s participation in a TV event that helped spark a dream that is now five decades in the making. In 1978, when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos to win Super Bowl X, 9-year old Tom and the McMahon family were like most of Helena’s citizenry back then, in holding a special interest in the Cowboys’ starting left offensive tackle: No. 67, Pat Donovan.

In a topsy-turvy Western AA boys basketball tilt in the Bears’ Den on Saturday, Helena High came out on top over Capital in the season’s first crosstown match, 49-43. The game featured 10 lead changes and five ties, with the largest margin of the night being just seven points. The Bruins held narrow leads at the end of every quarter: 11-10 after the first, 23-20 at halftime, and 34-33 heading into the final frame.

“We survived.”No, that’s not Gloria Gaynor singing her 1978 hit song. It’s Helena High girls basketball coach Eric Peterson’s initial comment after his team’s 46-39 win over Capital in the season’s first crosstown game. Helena fell behind by five early on in the Western AA tilt in the Bears’ Den, and trailed by three after the first quarter. Then the worm turned, and the Lady Bengals outscored Capital 15-4 in the second and took a 22-14 lead into halftime.

Chase Benson, one of Helena High’s most imposing modern-day football players, has committed to play for the Montana State University Bobcats. Benson, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive lineman, is a rare three-time all-stater, making honorable mention as a sophomore and first team his final two seasons.
