Nick Fernandes is used to the late day rhythm of crew teams rowing the North Branch of the Chicago River. May 14 was different while he walked his blind dog Sabo southeast of the Western Avenue bridge. “I heard this most horrific noise, as if a coyote got a cat,” he said Tuesday as he showed me the area. “I turn and see six goslings, three or four were hit by the boat. A couple were flopping.” An adult goose tried to help some goslings by lifting them with its bill.

Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. WILD OF THE WEEKGeorge Matysiewicz photographed this aged morel mushroom in May, noting, “Found at the back of the eighth hole tee box at Burnham Woods Golf Course. Not a good spot.” One, he perfectly captured an image symbolizing the end of morel season. Second, his observation, “Not a good spot,” is spot on. Picking morels on golf courses or similar areas heavily treated with herbicides and pesticides is a bad idea.

Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. WILD OF THE WEEKMartha Brynda photographed a pair of geese with 24 goslings at Nippersink Forest Preserve in Round Lake, then wondered, “Could this be the product of one or two pairs, or do they take turns babysitting for the flock?” I noticed the same thing over the years, so asked Roy Domazlicky, northern regional wildlife biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Lily pads and hard bottoms did it for Brother Rice Boat 1 Thursday in the Wolf Lake regional. Tom Hall and Joe Bowen won with five largemouth bass weighing 9.28 pounds. “Buzzbaits right in the lily pads, lily pad stems and hard bottoms,” coach Jim Hall said. “We had three keepers by 9:15 and our limit by 10:30,” Bowen said. Reavis finished second (7.67) in coach Tony del Alcazar’s final year. Daniel Gomez, casting Texas-rigged Senkos, caught big bass (2.86) to lead Oak Forest to third.

Numbers are out of whack in the inaugural season with a regional format for Illinois high school bass fishing. It’s good that the Illinois High School Association expanded to a regional format, a testament to the journey from its ground-breaking season in 2008-09. But the disparity of regional numbers are unlike in other IHSA sports or activities. Bass fishing is an activity. Under the new format there are six sectionals, each fed from five regionals being held today, Thursday, May 15.

Taking my wife to the final day of Spectrum of Spring, the spring flower show at Lincoln Park Conservancy. Course I enjoyed the water exhibits, especially the koi pond. My photographic version of an Impressionistic painting on the koi. Maybe I'm overstating the case. https://t.co/05Iah7ivFH

Tony Bonnette noted Louis Morgan, unexpectedly dying Monday while hunting. Way too young. Bumped into him off and on & I included him in a dove hunting story in 2020 and he had TOTW last year. https://t.co/iDvCwGx8A3 Details are at https://t.co/fIlpnyEOO4
