SHELBYVILLE, Ill.—Camping at Lake Shelbyville in early June for the high school bass fishing finals reminded me what a multi-use lake it is. Shelbyville was once the destination for Illinois muskie, then numbers and size dissipated before beginning a slow rebound. “We made some recent changes to our stocking practices that have shown to be successful at Lake Shelbyville, and we’re beginning to see a healthy population of muskie in the lake again,” fisheries biologist Jim Garavaglia emailed.

Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. FISH OF THE WEEKJames Baczek lived up to the nickname, “Jumbo Jimmy,” bestowed by Steve Palmisano at the late Henry’s Sports and Bait. On Monday, June 16, the reopening of perch season on Lake Michigan in Illinois, Baczek caught five jumbo perch night fishing with soft shells deep at Burnham Harbor. The jumboest perch of all was 16 inches and weighed 1 pound, 14 ounces. So Joe Grega’s yellow perch (2-8.75, caught Jan.

It’s audacious to plunk a stage in a prairie, then film ballet dancers inspired by endangered whooping cranes. But that’s what Chicago-based filmmaker Tim Whalen did in partnership with the International Crane Foundation in “Mates for Life: Whooping Crane.” The ballet-driven conservation film premiered Tuesday at Facets. I’m all for the intersection of the arts and nature and the audacity of Whalen and his collaborators.

Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. FISH OF THE WEEKCrappie in Chicago is the theme this week. BoRabb Williams texted Monday, “For the 1st time EVER, we fished for crappie in the Chicago RIVER and we were SHOCKED, catching Slab crappie 12-14 inches, thick ones averaging 1 1/2 pounds, big bluegills and some nice bass and catfish that we threw back. Impressed.” In the photo, Nolan Martin holds a pair of big crappie from the Chicago River. Must have been a good weekend for crappie.

“This sucks,” Dave Griffith observed accurately. We were wading through a patch of multifloral rose, a mess of prickles, Tuesday at the prescribed grazing demonstration project at Chain O’Lakes State Park. That’s the crux of the matter of invasive or exotic plants, whether introduced or arriving some other way. “We don’t have enough chainsaws in Chicagoland area to get this done,” he said. Volunteering the last three years at a prairie restoration, I couldn’t agree more.
