Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. MORELS OF THE WEEKJay Damm gave some insight last Sunday into hunting morel mushrooms this time of the years. “I began my hunt in the interior of the woods and started finding half-free morels (p*ckerheads), which means it’s early/mid-season and that told me to go to a sunnier, warmer spot. Sure enough, bingo.” He found morels along a limestone foundation. The stone warms faster than soil. Then he found some in direct sunlight.

The plain brown cardboard wrapper couldn’t stop my joy when “Fishes of the Chicago Region” arrived after years of waiting. I immediately found the section on my favorite fish, brook trout, listed as brook char (pages 304-305). The news was not good.

Two views of finding spring mushrooms. “I have been looking for morels for the past 20 years,” Ryan Leonard of Park Ridge emailed Friday. “Today was an `all timer.’ I found over 300. They were growing in clusters. I think yesterday’s rain really helped.”Some went to friends and family, others he dehydrates for the fall and winter. John “Moorel” Moore sent the first reports of morels a couple weeks ago.

When I rode along to observe the control of invasive hydrilla last month in Oak Brook, Dan Grigas said that, as a kid, he had to read the fishing report before going fishing. The fisheries ecologist for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage is now a grown man. I’ve been doing the Midwest Fishing Report for a long time, but today is my last Wednesday outdoors page. I’ll keep doing the two-page Sunday outdoors spread.

Taking my wife to the final day of Spectrum of Spring, the spring flower show at Lincoln Park Conservancy. Course I enjoyed the water exhibits, especially the koi pond. My photographic version of an Impressionistic painting on the koi. Maybe I'm overstating the case. https://t.co/05Iah7ivFH

Tony Bonnette noted Louis Morgan, unexpectedly dying Monday while hunting. Way too young. Bumped into him off and on & I included him in a dove hunting story in 2020 and he had TOTW last year. https://t.co/iDvCwGx8A3 Details are at https://t.co/fIlpnyEOO4
