Started four years ago when community members and city officials joined forces to arrange a week of events, Earth Week has grown to include hundreds of volunteers picking up trash around the city from the lakefront to each of the nine wards.

As an attorney with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, now state Sen. Darby Hills, R-Barrington Hills, spent a lot of her time involved with cases dealing with children. So, within six weeks of replacing former state Sen. Damn McConchie, R-Hawthorn Woods, after he resigned in February, she introduced her first bill that would toughen laws against people committing sex crimes against children. “Protecting children is my passion and my purpose,” Hills said.

He may have found his choice at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, during a Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 spring break college tour. “It’s a medium-sized school, and I like the average class size,” Parada said. “It has a good engineering program and a nice campus. I have a connection to the college now.

One role of community colleges is preparing students to move on to a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree. The College of Lake County (CLC) offers programs for that, and it also helps people like Giovanni Roncone become a firefighters after a two-year course. Already securing a job as a firefighter paramedic with a department in Lake County as he completes his two-year CLC program, Roncone, a Gurnee resident, spent time Saturday introducing others to the curriculum.
