When Shamsud Din-Jabbar turned onto Bourbon Street in the early morning hours of New Year's Day, it took him 15 seconds to barrel down three blocks before crashing into a construction crane. Along his short but deadly path of terror, he killed 14 people and injured dozens more before New Orleans police shot and killed him. Surveillance footage and eyewitness interviews allowed The Times-Picayune to create a map of what enfolded beginning around 3:17 a.m., when the attack began.

Over the past two decades, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans has grown from a single exhibit focused on the Allied landings on D-Day to an immersive, multi-building campus across six acres of the Warehouse District devoted to all aspects of the war and its aftermath. The building project that resulted in several exhibit halls, a theater, food and beverage offerings, a research center and a hotel is now completed, and museum leaders have offered a vision for what coming decades hold.
