In the first three months of 2025, 28 New Jersey businesses announced layoffs for a combined 3,618 workers, more than double the same period in 2024. JPMorgan Chase bank, as well as a health insurance firm and the company that makes Lysol, Mucinex and Finish are laying off hundreds of people later this year, according to April public filings with the New Jersey Department of Labor. The layoffs mark the first for the second quarter, which runs April 1 through June 30.

Federal officials said they plan to make aid available to businesses in and around Wharton slammed by traffic rerouted off Interstate 80 due to several sinkholes that have shut down parts of the highway in both directions. The aid will come in the form of low-interest loans from the U.S Small Business Administration, known as Economic Injury Disaster Loans, said a two-page letter Gov. Phil Murphy sent to the SBA on Tuesday.
