TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Churches across the world celebrated Good Friday with ceremonies and more. St. James Catholic Church in Tupelo celebrated the Stations of the Cross, a popular devotion in Catholicism. Parishioners gathered outside the church office and watched the 14 stations on Friday, April 18. Each station represents the moments leading up to Christ's death on the cross. WTVA spoke to several attendees about the bilingual service and its significance.
Child killed in collision with vehicle in New Albany

NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA) - A collision between a vehicle and a child on a bicycle killed the 11-year-old in New Albany. Union County Pam Boman identified the child as Kasen Wimberly. The coroner said the accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday, April 14 in the area of Booker and Baker streets. TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Traffic is backed up along part of Highway 45 in Tupelo Tuesday morning. The Tupelo Police Department reported an overturned 18-wheeler is blocking traffic on Highway 45 Southbound near McCullough Blvd. Drivers should expect "major delays" according to police. Big Lots store reopens in Tupelo

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - The Big Lots store in Tupelo is officially back in business. The popular discount retail chain held a soft opening of the West Main Street store on Thursday, April 10. The company closed hundreds of stores late last year after the chain filed for bankruptcy. However, a new company later assumed ownership and started the process of reopening stores. "I think it's great that they came back," customer Chris Lewis said on Thursday morning.

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Overnight storms injured at least six people in north Mississippi. Violent storms swept through the northern portion of the state and several other states Wednesday night, April 2 and Thursday morning. Gov. Tate Reeves reported three injuries in Tippah County, two in Tate County and one in Marshall County. He reported no deaths as of Thursday afternoon. He also reported damage to at least 60 homes in Benton, Bolivar, Marshall, Tate and Tippah counties as of Thursday afternoon.

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - The state crime lab positively identified a body found in Prentiss County last month and ruled the manner of death as homicide. Prentiss County Coroner Greg Sparks reported the body found is identified as Adan Equiarts Favila, 54, known in the area as "Durrango." He died after being shot. Sparks confirmed the discovery in the New Site area on March 24. It happened at a residence off County Road 4141.
Mississippi governor requests federal aid after March deadly storms

JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) - Gov. Tate Reeves is requesting FEMA assistance after severe storms spawned 18 tornadoes and killed seven people across Mississippi. Multiple counties experienced flooding, straight-line winds and tornadoes on March 14-15. The state is requesting individual assistance for 14 counties: Carroll, Covington, Grenada, Holmes, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jasper, Jefferson Davis, Leflore, Marion, Montgomery, Pike, Smith and Walthall.
