A new round-the-clock mental health line has been launched in Barnsley, in a bid to tackle one of the region’s most urgent health challenges – high rates of self-harm among children and young people. According to a report to Barnsley Metropolitan Council’s health and wellbeing board, Barnsley has the highest number of emergency admissions for self-harm among children and young people in Yorkshire and the Humber.

An opposition Rotherham councillor has urged the local authority to “get back to basics” by focusing on street-level services like public bin collections, amid concerns about overflowing bins in parts of the borough. Conservative councillor Joshua Bacon has warned that without improvements, Rotherham could face issues similar to those seen in Birmingham, where bin collection problems have made national headlines.

Barnsley Council lost out on more than £1.6 million in rent last year due to empty council homes, despite the number of vacant properties falling for the third year in a row. New figures reveal a growing gap between the number of empty homes and the cost they represent, as many council properties are now taking longer to re-let due to the increasing cost and complexity of repairs. The total rent lost has more than doubled since 2022, even though the number of empty properties has reduced.

Revised plans to add five new flats to a disused sports bar in Swinton have been approved, after a previous scheme was refused last year. The latest application, by Lexgreen Services LTD, seeks to create five additional flats on top of the disused Cafe Sport building on Station Street, bringing the total number of residential units to 17.

Drove past Sheffield a few times over the years & always wondered what they were building with all the cranes. Every year the cranes were there & I said to my husband how long have they been building there? The look on his face when he told me it was a crane yard.
