A spectacular display of the Northern Lights could be seen across all parts of the region overnight on Thursday. With clear skies dominating the overnight period an enhanced display was visible for a number of hours after nightfall, especially after the half-moon had set at around 10.15pm. What caused the Northern Lights? The Aurora Borealis are a direct result of weather in space and activity from the sun. Charged particles from the sun - called a coronal mass ejection (CME) - explode into space.

Hot on the heels of Storm Babet, which brought flooding and disruption to large parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, another named storm, Ciaran, is on its way to the UK. Why do we have a named storm? The Met Office has named the area of low pressure sweeping in from the southwest late on Wednesday as "Ciaran". It's the third named storm to affect parts of the UK and Ireland this autumn.

The first "blue super moon" since 2009 provided a spectacular sight in the skies over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire overnight on Wednesday. On 19 July 2022, the UK's hottest ever temperature was recorded at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The figure of 40.3C was the first time the mercury had ever topped 40C. Here, ITV News weather presenter Kerrie Gosney looks back at a history-making heatwave and what it said about our changing climate. There were a number of heatwaves in 2022 and it was our hottest year on record, but the spell of extreme heat between 16 and 19 July was unprecedented, reaching a milestone in UK climate history.
