An application to change the use of the ground floor of 4 The Crescent in Carlisle from retail to hot food takeaway were approved by Cumberland Council planners. The proposal, submitted on behalf of K L Limited, says that works will be limited to internal fitting out using the existing layout and access points. The Grade II site was last used as office space but has been vacant since 2021.

Permission has been granted by Westmorland and Furness Council to use The Old Smithy in Stainton to create a 'Men's Shed', a branch of the UK Men's Sheds Association. The planning decision report says that once approval is given, the group would be registered as a charity and take the building over on a long-term lease from the Parish Council, which lent the scheme its full support.

Jodie Emma Noble, of Ainstable, died of respiratory failure on November 10, 2024, in the Cumberland Infirmary, where she had been admitted on October 20 with signs of a 'severe chest infection'. An inquest at Cockermouth Coronerâs Court heard that Ms Noble, who had suffered from restricting anorexia nervosa and bulimia for 'many years', was placed in intensive care and treated with a five-day course of wide-ranging antibiotics for pneumonia.

The George and Dragon inn in Clifton has submitted an application to Westmorland and Furness Council, seeking approval of 'odour abatement' units attached to external extraction units. An retrospective application submitted in 2023 for the installation of replacement kitchen extraction and air supply units after a fire destroyed much of the pub's earlier equipment was refused due to residents' concerns over noise, odour, and harm to the appearance of the area.
