Christine M. Riordan, the first woman to serve as Adelphi University's president, is leaving her role after nearly a decade at the helm of the academic institution, officials announced Friday. "After 10 years leading the university, Dr. Christine M. The state Education Department has denied the Massapequa school district’s request for an extension to comply with a ban on Native American mascots, names and imagery, citing a lack of “good cause” effort, state officials said in a letter Friday. “The District’s extension request reveals that nothing whatsoever has been done to eliminate the use of its 'Chiefs' name, logo or mascot,” state officials wrote in a letter to the district.

Tuition at both of Long Island's community colleges could rise in the upcoming academic year, with Nassau Community College proposing its first increase since 2021-22. Nassau Community College officials are expected to present a $185 million budget to the county Legislature on Monday that includes a proposed 3.3%, or $190, annual increase in tuition for full-time students.

The U.S. Department of Education has referred its investigation into New York’s regulation banning Native American mascots and related imagery to the Department of Justice, federal officials announced on Tuesday. The move comes more than two weeks after U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon announced at Massapequa High School that the state Board of Regents' ban on Native American imagery in public schools violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

Wyandanch school officials announced Friday that they had chosen a new mascot name, making the district the latest to comply with the state's ban on Native American mascots and other imagery in public schools. Superintendent Erik Wright wrote in a letter to the community that the district has selected "Wolves" as their new name, replacing the current "Warriors" name. The name was chosen after a series of community surveys and forum discussions, he said.
