In less than two months, a citizen-led political committee collected $32,220 to campaign against the $285 million Midland Public Schools facilities improvement bond proposal. The "Committee for Midland Students and Taxpayers" received about half of that money from a Midland property management company and a Shelby Township-based "public charity." The balance of the committee's funding was mostly from small dollar amounts from Midland residents.

LANSING — Two companies are investing a combined $15.3 million in Michigan, creating 543 new jobs in Wayne and Bay counties, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Wednesday. HL Mechatronics, a Bay City-based research and development firm, will purchase and renovate 140,000-square-foot facilities in Williams Township, creating 43 jobs. The project will result in a total capital investment of $8.5 million to house engineering and R&D operations in Bay County.

Midland Garden Council is sponsoring a day trip by motor coach to University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Garden and two private gardens in the Ann Arbor area. The bus leaves the Center for the Arts parking lot at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6 and return to the same location by 7 p.m.Article continues below this adThe first stop is the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Erik Fleming, 54, a friend of Perry who communicated with Iwamasa to sell drugs to the actor. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. Prosecutors say Fleming distributed ketamine to Iwamasa. Dr. Mark Chavez, 54, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. Chavez sold ketamine that he had previously obtained by writing a fraudulent prescription to Plasencia, who then sold it to Iwamasa.

PHILADELPHIA — Dow Inc. asked the Third Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday to keep a New Jersey environmental lawsuit in federal court, arguing it acted under the direction of the federal government when supplying a chemical solvent that is now linked to cancer.
