(WSET) — Senior Kevin Zischke's two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning highlighted Averett University baseball's 3-2 win over No. 2 University of Lynchburg on Sunday at Owen-Fulton Field. The Hornets, however, took Game 2 and earned a doubleheader split with a 16-3 win in seven innings. Up 2-1 entering the top of the ninth of Game 1, Averett (17-10, 9-7 ODAC) was three outs away from putting away Lynchburg (27-5, 13-3 ODAC) in Game 1.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Salem Red Sox dropped their 5th in the last 6 games Sunday, 5-4, in Fredericksburg. The Sox (4-5) took a 4-1 lead after 3 innings, thanks to a 2-RBI double from Kelvin Diaz, and a 2 run-HR from Freili Encarnacion, but Fredericksburg would rally to tie it in the 4th, then Nick Peoples broke the tie with a solo home run in the bottom 6th that proved to be the game winner. Salem went just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position, leaving 8 runners on base.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Lynchburg Hillcats fell just short in their comeback against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Sunday, falling 8-7. Lynchburg fell behind early and spent the remainder of the game playing catch up. The Hillcats would crawl within one run three separate occasions but failing to get over the hump each time. Kannapolis struck first in the third inning on a Caleb Bonemer three run home run.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WSET) — Jade Hylton set the program record for career home runs in her first at bat as she helped power Virginia (30-13, 11-7 ACC) to a series sweep of Syracuse (22-19, 3-15 ACC) with a 10-2 victory in five innings on Sunday. Hylton got things started quickly with her record-setting home run to open the first. Three batters later and with two on, Sarah Coon went deep to left center to make it a 4-0 Virginia lead.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Lynchburg starting pitcher Jervis Alfaro dominated the Hillcats home opener, throwing 5 innings of shutout baseball in a 4-0 win at Bank of the James Stadium. Alfaro was rarely challenged on the mound for Lynchburg (3-1). The bullpen also did their job, allowing just one more hit on the day, while the pitching staff struck out 11 batters total. Kannapolis (1-3) went 0-4 with runners in scoring position.
