It came down to some close calls by the umps, and as usual it was a hard-fought game, but in the end, Franklin County edged Port St. Joe 6-5 last week for a chance to down Liberty County in the regional softball championship May 13. At 7 p.m. in Bristol, the second seeded Lady Seahawks (18-7) were set to face the Lady Bulldogs (20-3), a team they split with during the regular season, a 5-4 loss and a 1-0 win, before falling to them 13-2 in the districts.

The Port St. Joe Tiger Sharks varsity baseball team proved they deserved top billing in the regionals last week, as they swept the top seeded Cottondale Hornets in two straight games. Port St. Joe (19-10) were now set to face top-seed Holmes County (24-4) on Wednesday, May 14 in the state semifinals. In the regional semi-series, on May 8, junior Baylor Partie struck out five and walked two, giving up just five hits in hurling a seven-inning complete game shutout 2-0 of the Hornets.

Five years since it first submitted a proposal for a floating dry dock and ship repair facility, and later withdrew it, Gulf County is renewing its effort to secure millions of dollars for the project from Triumph Gulf Coast. Jim McKnight, director of the Gulf County Economic Development Coalition, said the original proposal was reworked, with the Port St. Joe Port Authority now as co-applicant.

Following a strongly worded letter from the commissioner of the Florida Department of Education, the Franklin County Schools have said they will not be moving forward with a proposal to implement a four-day school week next fall. On May 9. Superintendent Steve Lanier received a letter from Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. asking that he reconsider the four-day school week.
