The Bend-La Pine School District and every other district in the country received this letter on Feb. 14 from the new leadership at the U.S. Department of Education. In it, what can only be described as a diatribe against current federal and state laws that aim to protect disadvantaged students. Districts were given 14 days to come into full compliance with the edicts laid out in the letter or lose their federal funding. That 14 days ended Friday.

A review of emails sent to the Board of Deschutes County Commissioners show there was overwhelming public support for the county to keep its staff-led Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee, prior to the vote to dissolve the committee. The board voted 2-1 to shut down the committee. Commissioners Patti Adair and Tony DeBone voted in favor while Phil Chang voted against.
