Last Monday, right after Vermillion’s Memorial Day service, I was bouncing around on my riding lawnmower, driving in an ever-diminishing circle as I cut my grass. Mayor Jon Cole, the keynote speaker at Vermillion’s Memorial Day service held Monday, May 26 in the First Baptist Church, said women and men have sacrificed their lives in the U.S. Armed Services to defend a sacred commitment. He replied that he believes in a “big wall, big gate” philosophy. “We are a nation of immigrants, but we are also first and foremost a nation of laws,” the senator replied. “The rule of laws differentiates and distinguishes this country from many other countries around the world.
