VERMILLION — It’s not unusual for the Vermillion Fire/EMS Department, after fully assessing the situation it faces when it arrives at a structure fire, to send out requests to area fire departments for mutual aid to help battle the blaze. Vermillion Fire/EMS Chief Matthew Callahan told the Vermillion City Council at its regular Monday meeting that a better way to deal with these situations is to make the mutual aid requests automatic — in other words, to receive help automatically.

The Vermillion City Council decided Monday to grant a three-month extension of a sales tax rebate to Masaba, Inc. of Vermillion. With the extension, the rebate agreement end date is Sept. 30, 2025. The decision came after Mayor Jon Cole spent several minutes pushing back on the idea, claiming that Masaba needed the extension because it hadn’t done its due diligence in meeting the requirements of its agreement with the City.

Over a decade ago, I observed in a column that William Shakespeare has invaded your life. Perhaps you were assigned to read one of his plays, first penned about four centuries ago, and you found the whole experience to be drudgery. It’s time to make that observation again, for about a week from now — June 26 through June 29 — the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival will be going strong in Vermillion with nightly outdoor performances of “Romeo & Juliet” in Prentis Park.

Not much remains of the Jolley Elementary School as it has been razed so that the property can be used by the City of Vermillion to develop new housing in the community. One of the first new things that will be constructed soon is a new park that will be located directly north of Maple Street. The park will include a shelter, playground equipment and other amenities.
