School of Mines student files immigration lawsuit

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A former South Dakota School of Mines student is suing Department of Homeland security secretary Kristi Noem claiming that her immigration documents were wrongfully terminated. Priya Saxena is a doctorate student from India. Court papers say that the School of Mines informed her that her Student and Exchange Visitor Information System immigration record had terminated by the DHS. The actions will prevent her form graduating in May.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We are learning more about the South Dakota state employee arrested this week on child porn charges. According to a court document, 24-year-old Mohammad Ghosheh of Brookings worked with the Department of Social Services. He is charged with 11 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of exploitation of a minor. He also faces one charge for exploitation of a minor.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Rising property taxes were a topic discussed extensively during the 2025 South Dakota Legislative Session. On Thursday, Gov. Larry Rhoden signed a bill aimed at addressing the rising burden some South Dakota homeowners are seeing. Senate Bill 216 calls for capping total growth of assessed values for existing owner-occupied homes, and limits school districts to annual increases of no more than 3% from property taxes per year.

Scott Odenbach said Thursday.

It’s an effort to address food insecurity in KELOLAND. “Big problem in Sioux Falls, big problem in eastern South Dakota, big problem in the upper midwest, and so this is our attempt to try to make a difference in that space,” Avera McKennan Regional President and CEO Dr. Ronald Place said. Avera now has clinic-based food pantries in both Sioux Falls and Parkston.
