For the past 150 to 170 years Bellevue, Maquoketa and Preston have (and continue to have) strong community newspapers. But many may not know that several smaller Jackson County towns had their own newspapers back in the day as well. For example both Andrew and La Motte has their own newspapers for a time; and in fact, Andrew had one of the earliest newspapers in Jackson County, The Western Democrat, which was first published in 1851 by J.B. Dorr.

The series of lawsuits, dismissals, filings and appeals continue this month as the family of the late Angela Prichard of Bellevue say they intend to appeal their original lawsuit against the city to a higher court. This comes just weeks after a federal judge dismissed their claims against the Bellevue Police Department.

Bard Materials of Dubuque officially purchased Bellevue Sand and Gravel as of January 1, 2025 upon the retirement of John Schneider. Bard is of a leading supplier of ready-mix concrete and aggregate in eastern Iowa since 1946 with locations in Dubuque Dyersville and Plattville, Wisconsin.

After originally being dismissed in its entirety last fall, a recent attempt by the family of the late Angela Prichard to file an amended lawsuit against the Bellevue Police Department now also has been denied. In a judgment filed Jan. 23, C.J. Williams, chief justice for the U.S. District Court, officially struck down a motion in the plaintiff’s attempted amended refiling of the lawsuit against the Bellevue Police Department.
