A 3-year-old was injured in a shooting on North 26th Street near Laurel Street on Tuesday, according to Baton Rouge police. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the incident, which happened at around 6:40 p.m., according to a police spokesperson. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call BRPD's Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.

Police are investigating two fatal shooting that happened within hours of each other Tuesday night, according to a Baton Rouge Police Department spokesperson. The first shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Off of La Margie Avenue near North Cristy Drive. The second shooting happened around 8 p.m. in the 10,000 block of Avenue E. Both incidents are under investigation, said Lt. L’Jean McKneely.

Voters affirmed Dustin Yates’ leadership Saturday night, electing the interim mayor to steer St. George for the next four years. Yates defeated fellow Republican Jim Morgan 65% to 35%, according to complete but unofficial results. "This is a great moment. It's difficult to explain to folks what we've been through over the last so many years," Yates told supporters.
Suspect arrested for March shooting on Southern University campus

A man has been arrested in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a Southern University student on Sunday, March 2, the university announced Friday. Semaj Joiner was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Forth Worth, Texas on Thursday, nearly two weeks after the shooting. Joiner has been charged with carrying a firearm on school property, attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentalities.
State Police investigating 3 crashes, 4 deaths in 6 hours overnight in Baton Rouge area

Over the course of six hours — from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. — from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, there were three separate car crashes in the Baton Rouge area, resulting in the deaths of four people. Just after after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Louisiana State Police troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on La. 30 near Bluebonnet Boulevard. The crash resulted in the deaths of 24-year-old Jeremiah Downing and 22-year-old Hunter LaGrange of Hahnville.

Roughly $200,000 in high-speed license plate readers are planned for Interstate 110, Interstate 10, and Interstate 12 as part of the Page/Rive Public Safety Initiative, the Baton Rouge Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Foundation announced today. Since its launch in late 2022, the Page/Rice Initiative has been part of the installation of more than 100 surveillance cameras in crime hotspots throughout Baton Rouge in collaboration with law enforcement, the city-parish and the business community.
Baton Rouge police investigating death of woman found at hotel off of Airline Highway

A 56-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room near Airline Highway and Interstate 12 in Baton Rouge, and police are investigating her death as a homicide, according to a news release. Linda Mayes was found dead in one of the hotel's rooms at 9919 Gwenadele Ave. Autopsy results are pending and BRPD homicide detectives are now investigating her death. Police did not give a cause of death.
Sid Edwards in the lead for Baton Rouge mayor with one-third of the votes counted

With about one-third of the votes counted in East Baton Rouge Parish, Istrouma High football coach Sid Edwards has the lead over incumbent Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome. One hour after polls closed, nearly 100 of the parishes 331 precincts had been reported, and Edwards had roughly 54% of the vote. In the run-up to today's election, Broome was able to break fundraising records her campaign had set in the past.

District Judge Kelly Balfour wins seat on Louisiana 1st Circuit Court of Appeal

District Judge Kelly Balfour has won a seat on the Louisiana 1st Circuit Court of Appeal. Balfour ran against fellow district judge Eboni Johnson Rose, who remains suspended from her current job following an Aug. 6 order from a split Louisiana Supreme Court. He won with 57% of the votes, according to the unofficial results tallied Tuesday. The state Supreme Court removed Johnson Rose from her seat in the 19th Judicial District Court, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
