By By Debby Woodin | [email protected] An amended ordinance allowing permits to be issued for hunting deer inside the Joplin city limits won final approval from the City Council this week. The amendment, offered by council member Josh Bard at first reading on June 2, lowers the hunting age from 21 to 16 as long as someone at least 18 years old is along for the hunt.

On Wednesday, about 100 employees, board members and community members celebrated with Ozark Center and Freeman Health System the renovated and refreshed campus at the ranch, the result of a four-year $10.5 million initiative.

An effort to remove a Joplin lumber store from a special taxing district that would help fund construction of Prospect Village and to add some other stores to the district won City Council approval Monday night. Prospect Village is a $304 million development to be constructed south of 20th Street and east of Range Line Road to near 32nd Street. It will include a sports complex to attract more youth tournaments and family tourism to the city.

Three days of entertainment and activities celebrating Juneteenth in Joplin begin Thursday. The theme of the celebration is "Educate, Celebrate and Empower the Future."Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, or Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of African Americans in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19th, marking the day in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached outlying areas of the U.S. and effectively ended slavery.

Joplin area residents who use NOAA weather radios will need a different source of weather information Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio service will be out of commission those days while the system is updated, according to Joplin Emergency Manager Dave Holden and the National Weather Service in Springfield. That outage comes at a time when the Joplin area is at risk for thunderstorms carrying winds of up to 60 to 70 mph and hail.
