    Hoping to help both gardener and wildlife, a Centerport student installed houses for bats in a local community garden as part of his Eagle Scout project — an effort to help the animals thrive and control the number of mosquitoes. From May to October, Robert M. Kubecka Memorial Organic Garden in Huntington is abuzz with people planting and harvesting vegetables. But during the summer, the gardeners are bugged by mosquitoes, which are attracted to wetlands on the 15-acre site.

    A second lawsuit seeking to overturn the approval of the Melville Town Center Overlay District, which could bring up to 1,500 apartments to the hamlet, has been filed against the Town of Huntington. Southold-based-Long Island Oyster Growers Association and Babylon-based Open Water Enterprises LLC have named the town, the town board and the town's Department of Planning and Environmental Review in the lawsuit filed in State Supreme Court last month.

    A U.S. Coast Guard plan to modernize maritime navigation systems could include removing hundreds of buoys and other markers in the Northeast, and that has the attention of Huntington officials, who are offering town markers to replace two buoysthat might be removed from local waters. The Coast Guard says it will accept public comments on its proposal to remove about 350 of the 5,640 buoys and navigational aids that it maintains from northern New Jersey to Maine.

    Animal abusers in Suffolk County now face jail time and a fine if they are caught possessing an animal after a conviction for that crime, thanks to new penalties added to the county’s animal cruelty law. The Suffolk County Legislature approved making it a Class A misdemeanor for people who have an animal while listed on the county’s animal abuse registry. A Class A misdemeanor carries penalties of up to 1 year in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000, county officials said Wednesday.
