By Dustin AlbinoThe three-month wait is finally over. It‘s officially Daytona 500 race week, with the Great American Race kicking off the 2025 NASCAR season in style. Points are on the line in Thursday evening‘s twin Duel races, which could pay dividends throughout the regular season. While winning is optimal, points do matter. Such has been the case since the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022, when Martin Truex Jr., who finished fourth in the regular season standings, missed the Playoffs.

Nothing lasts forever. That include Kyle Busch’s streak of 19 consecutive winning seasons in the NASCAR Cup Series, as 2024 marked the first winless season of his career. He had a few chances to extend that number to 20 (see Atlanta Motor Speedway’s three-wide photo finish and races at Daytona International Speedway, Darlington Raceway and Kansas Speedway in the summer), but the best result he could muster was a pair of runner-up finishes in what can only be described as a nightmare of a year.

Championship Weekend is beginning to feel like the last two seasons. In 2022, Joey Logano dominated at Phoenix Raceway from the pole position. Last year, Ryan Blaney overcame a mid-field starting position to hoist the Bill France Cup. Those story lines are appearing again, with Logano qualifying second and Blaney starting 17th. Throw in William Byron qualifying eighth and Tyler Reddick in 10th, and it’s a challenge to handicap to the Championship 4.

Mark Kristl: In the NASCAR Cup Series race, it is largely dependent on qualifying because passing at Martinsville Speedway in the Next Gen is tough. William Byron has two wins, including the most recent one, and he has finished better than he qualified nine times in his 13 starts there. He’d be my best bet to win there. Even though there is usually drama in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsville, with Aric Almirola in the field, good luck to his competitors.
