Long-time State Representative Marvin Lucas is stepping down. Dec. 31 will be his last day. Lucas is a graduate of Fayetteville State University. After 30 years of public service, he's retiring and his replacement is no stranger to politics. "Twenty four in Raleigh, 23 in Spring Lake as alderman and as mayor," Lucas said. "Then I also did 33 years in the school system, so a total of 80 years all together."Lucas is 82 years old. He didn't start serving when he was 2.

The mother of a 7-year-old Fayetteville boy who was shot and killed during a drive-by shooting is hopeful police’s first arrest in the case will help find her son’s killer. Myra Gibbs, Zion Gibbs’ mother, discussed last week’s arrest of Sierra Chambers, who is charged with felony accessory after the fact in connection to the June 7 death of the boy. “I’m very hopeful that this is going to get who took my baby from me,” Myra Gibbs said. Zion Gibbs would have turned 8 years old on Dec. 30.

Hundreds are expected to attend this weekend's Veterans Day parade in Fayetteville, a special tradition held in Cumberland County for nearly 30 years. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at 222 Hay St. in downtown Fayetteville. The parade will be livestreamed on WRAL.com. This year marks the 28th year the Cumberland County Veterans Council has put on the parade.
