Witnesses described the final moments of Mark Garrity's life Wednesday as the trial began for the man accused of his murder. Taiseer 'Taz' Zarka, owner of a downtown Raleigh grocery, faces a second-degree murder charge for Garrity's April 2023 stabbing death. His defense contends he was trying to get Garrity to turn over a Gatorade he had stolen from the store, and that Garrity fought back. Prosecutors concede Garrity stole the drink, but say that does not warrant his death.

After a rise in deadly crime during the COVID-19 pandemic, homicides appear to be falling in Wake County. When violence spiked nationwide during and after the pandemic, Wake County experienced a record number of homicides – 52 in 2022 and 56 in 2023, according to Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman. Now the data may be improving. As of mid-November, 35 homicides have been reported in Wake County in 2024.

Some members of a group fighting to save Saint Augustine’s University believe the future of the historically Black university could be in jeopardy. Judge Becky Holt ruled Thursday that the SAVE SAU group is not allowed to make changes to the Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees. Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom for Thursday’s hearing, but WRAL News sat inside during Holt’s ruling.

A new Wake County campaign is aiming to curb the trend of veterans who die by suicide using a gun. Wake County is launching a program called “Lock. Call. Live.” to address the devastating impact of firearm suicide through education, empathy and action. The county has about 55,000 veterans. The campaign encourages secure storage, reaching out for help and living through life’s hardest moments – because crises don’t have to be permanent.
