I shuddered as I covered the public hearing Thursday night on Evergy's request for an electric rate increase - because I remember California. Evergy is requesting a bold increase of 8.62% in its rates.

Evergy is requesting a bold increase of 8.62% in its rates. That’s $196.4 million spread across 735,000 customers of what used to be known as Westar Energy, until a 2018 merger with the former Kansas City Power & Light Co. changed it all into Evergy.

Although he’s now United States ambassador to Israel, I’m pleased to report that Mike Huckabee has hung on to his side hustle peddling children’s books to frightened MAGA parents and grandparents who used to watch his shows on right-wing TV. It’s great he’s got a second job. I mean, seriously, what could possibly be going on in and around Israel that would require too much of his time and attention?

Competitors in the Kansas finals of the National Civics Bee get ready to do battle over their knowledge of government and the Constitution. The Wichita Eagle So, I'm sitting here on a Thursday afternoon, watching a bunch of junior-high-school kids answering questions about American government and constitutional rights. And the sad irony is they know more about it than at least 90% of the politicians and elected officials I cover on a daily basis. It's called the National Civics Bee.
