It took more than two hours for several local agencies to quell an oil fire that developed north of Emporia Tuesday afternoon. According to Lyon County Fire District 2, Allen Admire Chief Tharon Mott, area crews were called to the intersection of US Highway 56 and Road K, nearly 19 miles north of Emporia and 1.2 miles west of Allen, just before noon for a fire. Upon arrival, crews found two oil bulk tanks next to a pump that were fully engulfed in flames and encroaching on a third.

Emporia city commissioners could take a significant step towards a new medical facility in town as part of their meeting slate Wednesday. Leading off their action meeting is discussion and possible approval of a development agreement with Stormont Vail regarding a new building near West 18th and Road G. Commissioners have before them a six-year agreement as opposed to the original five-year plan.

A new broadband initiative is taking shape in Kansas, and the groundbreaking ceremony will be held in Emporia later this month. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has announced the Freestate Middle Mile network will break ground at Emporia State University’s Cremer Hall on June 18. In broad terms, the program is designed to ending or reducing digital gaps across Kansas.

The National Weather Service has issued weather alerts for area counties. *Urban and small stream flood advisory: south Lyon, northwest Coffey and southwest Osage counties until 10:45 am. Advisory follows between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain with additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1.5 inches expected. Includes Emporia, Lebo, Olpe, New Strawn, Hartford, Neosho Rapids, Reading, Olivet, John Redmond Reservoir, Melvern Lake and Beto Junction. *Flood watch: All area counties until 7 am Wednesday.

One person was hurt and hospitalized after a truck-deer crash in far northeast Lyon County on Monday night. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 9 pm at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 154.4, or near the Lyon-Wabaunsee county line. Troopers say 81-year-old William Kent of Emporia was driving in the southbound outside lane when a deer entered his lane and hit the truck’s front end.
