The West Virginia baseball team started the week on a 14-game winning streak, the program's longest since the 2006 team had a 17-gamer. The program record — 18 straight in 1964 — is in sight. The Mountaineers, at 34-4, have easily the Big 12's best overall record, and they're on top of the conference standings with a 13-3 mark. Are they the Big 12's best team, though? That's the point of the weekly Big 12 baseball power rankings.

The Texas Tech baseball team, in a 12-8 victory Saturday at Arizona State, hit a season-high six home runs and got one of its best performances of the year from a starting pitcher. Davis Rivers hit two of the long balls. Rivers and Logan Hughes drove in four runs apiece, Hughes with a homer and two doubles. Zane Petty (1-2) went eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

Mitch Griffis' grandparents made a long trip to see the Texas Tech football spring game. So the Red Raiders' new quarterback who transferred from halfway across the country wasn't going to sit out because he was sick. Good thing. Griffis threw two touchdown passes — both showing arm talent into tight windows — to highlight the annual spring game at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Texas Tech football team doesn't get a chance to win head-to-head battles on the field with Texas A&M and Texas now that both the old rivals are in the Southeastern Conference. The Red Raiders can beat the Aggies and Longhorns for a recruit now and then, though. On Friday, Aaron Bradshaw from undefeated state champion North Crowley committed to Texas Tech over a long list of schools that recruited him, including Texas A&M and Texas. He announced his choice on social media.

Someday soon, the high point of spring practice for Texas Tech football fans might be one or more scrimmages against another FBS school. Colorado coach Deion Sanders has led the charge to change an NCAA rule that disallows it, and Tech coach Joey McGuire has amplified the call. For now, the usual intra-squad spring game, if one can even call it that, will have to do.
