In the wee hours of the morning, Sujin Witherspoon would spend time drafting a book in her University of Washington dorm, tapping away on her laptop keyboard. Juggling college classes, homework, an internship, a tour guide job at UW and her social life, Witherspoon spent every free minute of her senior year crafting the story in her head. Five minutes before 6 p.m., a big milling crowd of 40 to 100 runners have gathered at Fleet Feet’s Capitol Hill store on Tuesday and Thursday nights for the last 14 years. From there, the runners would cross the street to warm up and stretch at Cal Anderson Park — an icebreaker of sorts — before running 3 to 6 miles around the city, chatting and making new friends along the way. In 2024, 67 families from Ventura County have been aided by the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation. Low to moderate-income families can qualify for checks up to $7,000 upon diagnosis. If a child relapses, needs a bone marrow transplant or receives a secondary cancer diagnosis, families can receive another $2,500. In January, 20-year-old Liliana Suarez was on vacation with her parents and sisters in Mexico when she got very sick. She got headaches, an eye infection, throat pain and bruises around her legs.
