The Erie School Board is poised to pass a budget that would reduce property tax bills by about $60 per homeowner in 2025-26. That's right. Taxes would go down. The topsy-turvy situation once seemed unthinkable for outgoing Superintendent Brian Polito. The 10,000-student Erie School District was facing insolvency when he started as schools chief eight years ago. "I never thought I would be at the point where I would not recommend a tax increase," he said in an interview.

The winner in the race for Erie County Common Pleas Court judge will fill the seat that has been vacant since the retirement of Judge Elizabeth K. Kelly in April 2024. Leigh Ann Orton sees herself as the ideal fit for what had been Kelly's job. Orton, the first assistant solicitor for Erie County, wants to preside over the same kinds of cases as Kelly did — cases in family court and Orphans Court, which handles wills and estates.

Merski said her "diverse legal background" is among her qualifications to be the next judge on the Erie County Court of Common Pleas. Merski is running in the May 20 municipal primary against Jeremy Lightner, a chief district attorney for Erie County; and Leigh Ann Orton, the first assistant solicitor for Erie County.
