The word “Eden” makes me think of a heavenly paradise. When I visited Eden Center, a Vietnamese strip mall in Falls Church, Virginia, for the first time, it did not fall short of my imagination. The Eden Center, its parking lot constantly overflowing with cars, is designed like a maze; every corner pulls me to different shops, boutiques, and eateries.

Faculty and staff established the Rice Jewish Network this semester. Moshe Vardi, Lisa Geda, Anatoly Kolomeisky, Rebeca Kalontarov, Lisa Birenbaum and Yael Hochberg were all involved in the creation of the organization, which aims to create a support system for Jewish people on campus, according to Vardi. Vardi, a professor in computational engineering, said the influx of antisemitism around the world and on campus after Oct. 7 prompted the creation of this support network.

IGNITE pushes for women in politics A new chapter of IGNITE, started under the national organization of the same name, was founded at Rice by Aleena Ahmad and Carmine Steiner this semester. The organization is dedicated to closing the gender gap in the political sphere by encouraging civil and political engagement for women and nonbinary people, according to their website. Steiner said the club provides members with the skills and confidence to promote change in politics.

D.C. has long been a home for mom and pop bookstores, often nestled in the nooks and crannies of the city. Sooner or later, every District bookworm becomes familiar friends with the likes of Capitol Hill Books, Busboys and Poets, and Second Story Books. On Labor Day, one more store joined the city’s lineup of iconic bookshops: JF Books, D.C.’s first and only Chinese-language bookstore.

In “Venus in the Sea,” the blushing lead single from Ha Vay’s 2023 EP Avalanches and Unfamiliar Ways to Die, the singer-songwriter wails “enraptured in the bluest dark, I captured your beating heart.” Just over a year later on her debut album Baby I’m The Wolf (2024), Ha Vay enraptures us all over again. Here, Ha Vay plucks Venus out of the sea and drops her into the bleeding heart of the forest, extending a hand to us so that we may follow her down the rabbit hole.

Released on June 21, the singer-songwriter’s sophomore album is a candid journal of all her most clandestine secrets, delivered in addictive melodies and lyrical poetry. Much like the daring sentiment of the record’s lead single, “Risk,” Abrams embraces a new sound on The Secret of Us, while still channeling the familiar heart-aching bluntness that first shot her to fame.

Leisure Wild is not exactly the first word that students would use to describe Georgetown. More likely than not, it does not even crack the top 10 descriptors (ambitious, academic, and elitist are perhaps some of the terms that make up this hypothetical list). “All’s fair in love and poetry.” Taylor Swift ominously teased the above line on social media after announcing her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), during her 2024 Grammys acceptance speech. Cheekily referencing the adage “all’s fair in love and war,” this album fittingly sees Swift let all of her thoughts run loose without regard for consequence.
