EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Avoidable deaths have increased across the United States for more than a decade, according to a study by Harvard and Brown universities. These deaths range from vehicle crashes to not getting medical treatment. Christopher Gavin, a reporter for Boston Globe RI, joined 12 News at 4 Thursday to talk about the study's findings and what results from New England showed.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence Mayor Brett Smiley joined 12 News at 4 on Wednesday to discuss the capital city's upcoming budget proposal and more. Smiley told 12 News anchor Kim Kalunian that balancing this year's budget is particularly tricky due to a settlement that requires the city to pay Providence Public Schools upward of $10 million. The mayor said that money will come from a combination of new property taxes, revenue fines and fees, and cuts on the part of the city.

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - The winner of last year's Rhode Island State Spelling Bee will once again be representing the state on a national stage. Scituate Middle School student Elliana Pagliarini won the statewide spelling bee again on Saturday at the Gamm Theatre in Warwick. Pagliarini correctly spelled "skittish" after 21 rounds against 17 other kids from throughout Rhode Island.
