EAST VALLEY, Wash. — Research shows less than a third of sexual assaults get reported to police and only a fraction of those end with the perpetrator behind bars. Authorities say it's sometimes due to a lack of physical evidence, witnesses unwilling to speak up or negotiating the legal complexities of consent. However, there are cases where the evidence piles up, all of those boxes get checked and still, justice isn't guaranteed.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima County is facing a third lawsuit alleging it has failed to release public records related to Coroner Jim Curtice, despite a $65,000 settlement agreement resolving two previous lawsuits. Hall & Gilliland, the law firm representing the plaintiffs, claims the county is violating that agreement by refusing to hand over text messages between Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Brusic and the coroner’s wife regarding the case.

SELAH, Wash. —The Selah Downtown Association has enlisted local high school students to help with its effort to enhance the city’s appearance. As part of the project, outdated garbage cans are being replaced with wine barrel wraps designed by a local artist. In addition, Selah High School students have created metal logos that will be featured on both the new garbage can covers and city flower boxes.

MABTON, Wash. — The Mabton City Council remains at odds with Mayor Rachel Ruelas over her decision to hire a city treasurer without council approval, an issue they hope their newly hired attorney can help clarify. The council recently hired Wenatchee-based law firm Ogden Murphy Wallace to provide legal advice following the departure of City Attorney Ben Riley, who left for a position in Benton County.
