Seventeen-year-old Jazlin Betancourt graduated as a junior from West Valley High School on Friday. As a freshman, the West Valley resident started high school with a year’s worth of high school credits and ambition. Betancourt’s ambition not only pushed her to graduate ahead of schedule, but it also drove her to participate in several extracurricular activities such as DECA, ASB and performing as a percussionist in the school band (joining her junior year having never played before).

The Yakama Nation, locals and visitors from all over Indian Country will gather this weekend for the 170th Treaty Day Commemoration. The Treaty of 1855 was signed June 9, 1855, at Camp Stevens in the Walla Walla Valley. The treaty is between the U.S. government and the 14 confederated tribes and bands of the Yakama Nation. The Yakamas became a sovereign nation within the boundaries of the Yakama Reservation, ceding much of their ancestral territories to the U.S. government.

Last year's Aviation Day at the Yakima Air Terminal was a huge hit, as thousands of people turned out to look at aircraft up close. This year's free event will feature more types of aircraft, along with a pancake breakfast. Other events this weekend include an art show at Chalet Place and a choir concert at Yakima Valley College. June Art FestJune Art Fest, a fine arts and crafts show, will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chalet Place Mall, 56th and Summitview avenues.
