The new year brings a mixed picture for women’s political representation – the highest glass ceiling in American politics remains intact, but female governors and state legislators are setting new records. The number of women in Congress is decreasing but not by much. Overall, 150 women will serve on Capitol Hill in the new Congress, down from the record of 152 set in 2024.

On Nov. 19, President-elect Donald Trump named former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who led the Small Business Administration from 2017 to 2019, to head the Department of Education. McMahon served for a year on the Connecticut Board of Education from 2009 to 2010 and spent extended time on the Board of Trustees of Sacred Heart University between 2004 and 2017, but overall has a comparatively limited education background.

(CNN) — Democrat Angela Alsobrooks will win the Maryland Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan, whose candidacy made the race to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin competitive in this otherwise deep-blue state. Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County executive, will be just the fourth Black woman elected to the Senate, after Delaware’s Lisa Blunt Rochester won earlier Tuesday, and the first Black senator to represent Maryland.
