LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – If your weekend plans included heading to Louisville for some funnel cake, live music, arts, and a car show, we have some bad news. The 44th Annual Red Hills Festival scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. The Red Hills Festival Committee made the announcement this afternoon, on May 9. The committee cited the possibility of heavy rainfall throughout the day as the reason.
MUW holds graduation ceremony in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Long, Blue Line is now a little longer. Friends and family members were on hand on May 9 as more than 300 Mississippi University for Women students received their diplomas at two ceremonies on The W’s Columbus campus. The early ceremony featured graduates from the Vandergriff College of Nursing and Health Sciences receiving their associate, bachelor, and doctorate degrees in nursing, along with graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences.
MS Supreme Court denies Auditor's dismissal on NFL player's defamation

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Supreme Court denied State Auditor Shad White’s appeal to dismiss a former NFL quarterback’s defamation lawsuit against him. White had filed a request with the state’s high court on March 12. Our statewide news partner, WLBT, reports White wanted the court to overturn a decision by a Hinds County Judge to dismiss the suit filed by Hall of Fame Quarterback Brett Favre, saying he was only exercising his First Amendment rights.

EAST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE (WCBI) – Hundreds of students earned a new title: graduate. East Mississippi Community College’s Golden Triangle Campus hosted two graduation ceremonies today. This morning, on May 9, Career Technical students crossed the stage at the Lyceum Auditorium in Mayhew. Graduates earned certifications and degrees in more than 20 career fields. This afternoon, the Golden Triangle Campus hosted ceremonies for Academic graduates.
Oktibbeha apartments receive damage from recent storms

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Some parts of the viewing area saw severe, but fast-moving storms this afternoon. A severe thunderstorm in Oktibbeha County caused heavy damage to an apartment complex. Oktibbeha County Fire Coordinator Patrick Warner sent us these pictures of the damage at Brelands Overlook near Rockhill Road in the county. The roof was blown off, and several vehicles were damaged. Fortunately, there were no major injuries.
New Columbus Freedom Trail Marker honors Civil Rights pioneer

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mississippi Civil Rights pioneer is being remembered in a permanent way in Columbus. A Freedom Trail Marker honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Emmett J. Stringer was unveiled today on Catfish Alley. Stringer was a leading figure in the NAACP in Mississippi for more than 40 years. The Mound Bayou native moved to Columbus in 1950 and practiced dentistry at an office on 4th Street South, Catfish Alley.
Columbus Crime Center plans to request federal funding to MS delegation

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus city leaders are hoping Federal money can help them fight crime. For a second year, the city is planning to request $2 million to Mississippi’s Congressional delegation. The money would be used to create a crime center that would help not only the Columbus Police Department, but also agencies from around the area better investigate, respond to, and prevent crimes.

(WCBI) -A powerful explosion rocked parts of Tuscaloosa County on May 7Our news partner, WVUA in Tuscaloosa, reports that the explosion happened just before noon at the Hunt Oil Refinery inWest Tuscaloosa. Smoke could be seen billowing from the area of the refinery when first responders arrived at the scene. People as far as 16 miles away reported hearing the explosion.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The timing for a proposed trip to Washington, D.C., caused considerable debate during Tuesday night’s Columbus City Council meeting. Outgoing Ward 2 Councilman Joseph Mickens proposed taking a trip to the capital in June to speak to Mississippi’s Congressional delegation about funding requests for city projects. The city is asking for about three and a half million dollars for a regional crime center, the fossil park, and further drainage projects.
Grenada man arrested at a hospital for aggravated assault

GRENADA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Grenada County man makes a trip to the hospital, and then a trip to jail after an argument leads to gunfire. The Grenada County Sheriff’s Office said Phillip Wayne Fly and Dylan Coarsey exchanged words in the parking lot of B’s Grocery in Gore Springs. That argument escalated into a fight, and shots were fired, leaving Coarsey with gunshot wounds. He was airlifted to an area hospital.
