WCBI-TV (Columbus, MS)
WCBI – TV holds the distinction of being the inaugural television station in North Mississippi. It officially started broadcasting on July 13, 1956, thanks to Birney Imes, Jr., who owned the station. Initially, WCBI operated from a set of concrete block buildings situated in a pasture to the east of Columbus, right along Highway 12.

CALEDONIA, Miss. (WCBI) – A Caledonia man is in the Lowndes County Jail on child sex charges. Detectives with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested 62-year-old Charles Raymond Hughes earlier today, on May 30. Hughes was charged with Sexual Battery and Molesting – Touching a Child for Lustful Purposes. The arrest comes after an investigation that began earlier this month when a family member reported that Hughes had inappropriately touched a child he reportedly had custodial access to.

ECRU, Miss. (WCBI) – A Mexican Citizen is indicted by a federal grand jury in Oxford for alleged illegal re-entry into the United States after being charged with a state child sex crime. According to court documents, 34-year-old Filiberto Gonzalez-Tovar of Ecru was arrested by the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office in August 2024, after a report of a sexual assault of a minor. Gonzalez-Tovar was charged in state court with two counts of rape.

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A West Point man has been arrested in Lowndes County after a brief pursuit. On Wednesday, May 28, deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56-year-old Gerry Scott Dailey. Dailey was accused of grand larceny from a local business. The arrest followed a two-mile chase after deputies attempted to stop Dailey for a traffic violation on Highway 82.

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – Amory residents will soon have a new place to seek shelter from future storms. City officials broke ground today for a new community tornado shelter. The shelter will be built near Fire Station #2 in Ward 2, an area that was hard hit by the March 2023 tornado. It is expected to cost around $1 million when complete. Community Development Disaster Relief Block Grants are expected to pay for around 900 thousand of that. The shelter will have room for 256 people.

BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Shots were fired at a barbershop in Brooksville on Thursday evening, May 29. According to Brooksville Police Chief Virginia Rich, no one was injured, and no arrests have been made. Chief Rich said this is an isolated incident, and the people involved knew each other. Chief Rich said this type of behavior will not be tolerated. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information should contact Brooksville PD or Golden Triangle Crimestoppers.
