“Bellevue is big,” wrote Carolyn Casey of The Seattle Times in a story published November 28, 1984, “but it isn’t big enough for the rapidly growing Microsoft Corp., which has announced plans to move from its cramped location straddling Highway 520 in Bellevue to a much larger site in Redmond.”That much larger site has now been Microsoft’s headquarters for nearly 40 years.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, even in the heavily subsidized cafés on Microsoft’s Redmond campus. But that doesn’t mean employees have it bad. After all, they might still qualify for a free plate at Dough Zone, a separate line for check-in at Sea-Tac, and a discounted stay at Suncadia.

Any good college town has a few odd corners and special spots known only to locals. Given that the University District is home to a giant campus, it has a lot of those things. We found our favorite tucked-away treasures (plus one parking hack). Duck into an alley for Cafe Allegro, which claims to be the city’s oldest espresso bar and still roasts its beans on-site.
