Any good college town has a few odd corners and special spots known only to locals. Given that the University District is home to a giant campus, it has a lot of those things. We found our favorite tucked-away treasures (plus one parking hack). Duck into an alley for Cafe Allegro, which claims to be the city’s oldest espresso bar and still roasts its beans on-site.

Ciscoe Morris hitchhiked to Seattle from Wisconsin in 1971 after getting out of the military. “I never had any idea I’d ever be doing TV and radio and giving talks everywhere,” he says. His first job in Washington was on a garden crew at a Seattle City Light facility in the North Cascades. His boss there told him to go get some education—so he did, at South Seattle Community College.

Then: A sleepy waterfront town perfect for lunch with your grandmother or watching a parade. Hometown to a quaint retail chain called Costco.
