(WMBF) - The mother of a teenage girl is speaking out after her daughter was hurt during a shooting in the heart of Myrtle Beach. “We are hurting. I am an emotional wreck,” said Kendra Malloy. Malloy’s 15-year-old daughter, Serenity Chavis, was shot in the left leg on April 26 as she and a group of friends from Laurinburg were enjoying spring break. “We’re scared now,” said Malloy.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - As the summer begins, tourism season is in full swing, bringing in tourists and J-1 students. Now, those students have a new, safe, and secure place to lay their heads as a new residence hall is set to open in May. On Wednesday, WMBF News got the chance to tour the new residence halls along Robert Grissom Boulevard. The halls, set to open in May, will be at 100% capacity and house 300 J-1 students.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has released preliminary details surrounding the deadly shooting on Ocean Boulevard over the weekend. In a news release from SLED, Myrtle Beach police officers were called to a “disturbance” on North Ocean Boulevard on Saturday, where reports of a man shooting into a crowd. SLED said an officer shot back at the man, who was hit and pronounced dead at the scene.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - Catholics across the Grand Strand shared their reactions Monday after the death of Pope Francis. The Vatican said Francis died of a stroke that put him into a coma, later leading to heart failure. He was 88. “I just saw him yesterday on television,” said Terri Stonefield, who attends Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach. Stonefield added that she is glad that Vice President JD Vance was able to visit Francis before he died.
