A Coney Island community health clinic is set to reopen in a new, permanent location in what NYC Health+Hospitals called a “significant milestone” for providing healthcare to the community. Hospital leaders, doctors, and elected officials including U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries gathered on Surf Avenue on Tuesday cut the ribbon on the Ida G. Israel Community Health Center, which will offer primary care, family medicine, and more.

Southern Brooklyn’s grandmothers graced the stage in their glitziest gowns at the annual Your Highness Grandmother pageant in Brighton Beach on Oct. 27 to show, once again, that age is just a number. Almost a dozen women competed in two categories — “Queen Grandmother,” for those age 77 and up, and “Grandmother,” for everyone else. The contestants sang, answered trivia questions, and showed off their talents in front of a panel of local judges for a host of prizes.

Scores of colorful mermaids and sea creatures braved scorching heat and a summer storm on Saturday for the 42nd annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. The parade bills itself as the largest art parade in the U.S., and an homage to the nabe’s wacky past and present. Decked out in glitter and tentacles, Mermaid Queen and Neptune King Joe Coleman led the procession of marching bands, floats, and nautical homemade costumes and puppets down Surf Avenue and onto the boardwalk.

Friends, family and supporters of Evan Gershkovich — the reporter detained in Russia last March — gathered together to mark the one-year anniversary of his wrongful imprisonment with an event in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach and at a beach of the same name overseas. The event, called “Swim for Evan,” was held on March 23 with Gershkovich’s colleagues from the Wall Street Journal and friends taking a plunge in the icy water in his honor.
