It’s the last weekend in May and the first weekend in June, and that can only mean one thing for the Jersey Shore: Traffic. At 4:18 p.m., there were reports of delays and pockets of heavy volume on the Garden State Parkway southbound. That was south of Exit 98 (Route 138) in Wall to south of Exit 83 (Route 9) in Toms River. Traffic was slow-moving for about 12 miles. The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until midnight for Monmouth and Ocean counties. Showers and thunderstorms are possible into the overnight hours. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall, with south winds of 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch are possible, according to the weather service in Mount Holly.

NEPTUNE CITY — A sobriety checkpoint will be set up on Route 35 in the borough tonight, said Michael Schneider, coordinator of Monmouth County’s DWI Task Force. All southbound vehicles on Route 35 will be diverted into the Sunoco gas station, at Steiner Avenue, where drivers will be screened, said Schneider, who is also the chief of police in Allenhurst. The checkpoint will be in place from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, he said.

TOMS RIVER — Ocean County commissioners on Wednesday softened their previous criticism of planned changes to Medicaid in the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a week after the GOP-led legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Residents packed a public meeting of the Board of Commissioners on May 21 to complain about proposed cuts to Medicaid in the bill. The board heard from constituents who shared deeply personal stories about how Medicaid had saved their lives or the lives of family members.
